If you’ve had your Kansas learners permit for at least 12 months, and have completed 25 hours of supervised driving, you’re eligible to apply for your restricted Kansas drivers license. Once you’ve gotten that, you can work towards getting your full unrestricted Kansas license. Here’s what you’ll need to do for both.
To get your restricted Kansas license, you must be at least 15 years old and have held your instruction permit for at least one year. You must also have completed a Kansas-approved drivers education course (this will be offered at your high school), and in addition to any behind-the-wheel you had during that course, you must have logged 25 hours of supervised driving. You’ll need to track that on your Kansas Supervised Driving Affadavit, and you’ll need to have a parent or legal guardian verify it with their signature.
Once you’ve satisfied these requirements, you can contact your local Kansas DMV testing office and schedule an appointment. You’ll need to provide proper identification, proof that you’ve passed your drivers education course, have 25 hours logged on the Kansas Supervised Driving Affadavit (signed by your parent or guardian), and the required fees. You’ll take a vision test as well.
Once you’ve gotten your Kansas restricted drivers license, you’ll enjoy some new behind-the-wheel freedom. You’ll be able to drive with the following restrictions.
When you turn 16, and you’ve completed your required 50 hours of supervised driving, some of these restrictions will be lifted. You’ll be able to drive anywhere from 5am to 9pm; anytime going to or from work; anytime going to or from authorized school activities; directly to or from any religious worship service held by a religious organization. You’ll be able to drive anytime and anywhere with a licensed adult who’s at least 21 years old.
The last step in the Kansas drivers license process is getting your unrestricted Kansas drivers license. When you turn 17, or if you’ve had your restricted license for 6 months, you’ll be eligible to apply for your unrestricted license. The process is very similar to getting your restricted license. You’ll need to contact your local Kansas DMV testing office and schedule an appointment for your drivers license test. You’ll need to provide proper identification, show that you have the full 50 hours logged on the Kansas Supervised Driving Affadavit (signed by your parent or guardian), and the required fees. You’ll take a behind-the-wheel driving test as well as a vision test.
